FAQFrequently Asked Questions

What is EHSS? What activities are included?

EHS refers to the integrated management of Environment, Health, and Safety (HSE, ESH, or sometimes called EHSS with the addition of Sustainability).

Environment (E) includes a systematic approach to waste and wastewater treatment and compliance with environmental laws and regulations.

Health and hygiene (H) includes management of the work environment and operations, and employee health management activities including medical examinations, etc.

Safety (S) includes the maintenance of the work environment, inspection of work machinery and tools, improvement of work processes and procedures, use of protective equipment, and safety training to prevent and treat occupational accidents.

Sustainability (S) includes managing and reducing carbon dioxide emissions, managing environmental performance such as water usage, and related information disclosure activities.

Why are EHSS activities important for companies?

Many global companies conduct periodic EHSS compliance audits of their own sites and suppliers to ensure compliance with local regulatory and legal requirements. Domestic companies operating overseas also need to comply with the laws and regulations of the countries in which they are based in order to conduct their business activities.

Efforts to protect the environment and improve the health and safety of employees and local communities will be increasingly required of companies from a CSR (corporate social responsibility) perspective.

ProFirm Japan’s environmental and occupational health and safety services analyze the impact of client companies’ activities on the environment and support employee health and safety management to ensure the continuity of corporate activities and to create a safe working environment for employees.

Limited internal resources do not allow for the creation of EHSS-related procedures or training.

Not only small and medium-sized companies, but also many global companies are currently facing the problem of lack of EHSS-related resources due to cost reductions and retirement of senior personnel.

ProFirm Japan provides a variety of services to support our clients, including conducting surveys on the status of compliance with environmental occupational health and safety laws and regulations in Japan and overseas, preparing work procedures, and providing health and safety training.

What are the benefits of obtaining ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certification?

ISO 45001 is an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems, developed based on already existing codes and standards such as OHSAS 18001 and published in March 2018.

There is also an international standard for environmental management systems called ISO 14001.

These two ISO standards were created according to unified terminology and definitions, making it easier to build and operate an integrated system.

By obtaining ISO 45001 certification and establishing an integrated EHS management system, a company that already has ISO 14001 certification can expect to increase the efficiency of its environmental occupational health and safety activities, reduce costs, and improve credibility with customers and stakeholders.

In addition, since the basis of the ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system is based on PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act), it enables efficient identification of issues and problems and prompt and effective implementation of response and prevention measures.

ProFirm Japan’s environmental and occupational health and safety services support client companies from acquisition of ISO certification to establishment of an integrated management system suited to the company.

What are the risks associated with inadequate environmental and occupational health and safety compliance?

If environmental and occupational health and safety measures are not adequately addressed, there are four risks

Environmental Pollution and Environmental Destruction Risk
Risk that the company’s activities actually have a negative impact on the natural environment.

Legal Risk
Risk of legal violations

Market Risk
Risk that goods and services of a company that does not address issues of sustainability and environmental change will not be sold, especially in Europe

Reputation Risk
Risk of damage to the value of a company’s brand

To proactively manage these risks, PROPHERM Japan provides assistance in confirming EHS compliance management within the company, conducts surveys on the status of compliance with environmental laws and regulations in Japan and Asian countries, and conducts surveys on the status of compliance in the supply chain. We also conduct surveys on the status of compliance in the supply chain.
